5 Ways to Avoid Burnout This Summer

Ah, summertime…the season of sunshine, relaxation, and carefree days. We’ve made our way through a long dark winter where we were dedicated to “being” and inner pursuits like self-reflection and shadow work. In spring, we planted the seeds we’d nurtured over winter, and now we’re ready to stoke our inner fire and let it burn like the hot sun overhead while we take MASSIVE ACTION and GO and DO ALL THE THINGS!!!

But let’s pump the brakes here for a second. As we feel pulled toward a thousand adventures and the desire to make the most of this special time, it’s important to avoid over-doing it and flaming out in a fiery ball of summer exhaustion. Been there, done that, and after looking at our summer calendar, I’m in danger of doing it again this year.

So, on this Summer Solstice, the first day of astronomical summer, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind us all, and especially myself, of some simple but effective ways we can embrace the summer vibes and enjoy a refreshing season without all the stress and exhaustion.

Here we go…

  1. Set Realistic Expectations: With a seemingly endless array of summer activities and events available to us, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and overload our schedules. Remember, it’s okay to say “no” and be selective about the things you do. By setting limits, you ensure that your schedule stays balanced, allowing you to fully enjoy the activities you do choose to participate in. Remember, quality over quantity!

  1. Plan and Organize: Summertime can quickly become chaotic if you don’t have a plan in place. Take some time to map out your priorities and commitments. Create a realistic schedule that allows for downtime, relaxation, and the pursuit of hobbies. By organizing your time effectively, you’ll reduce stress and have a clearer vision of how to navigate the summer months without feeling overwhelmed.

  1. Prioritize Self-Care: Summer is a time to indulge in self-care and nurture your well-being. Take advantage of the longer days to establish a routine that includes activities you genuinely enjoy. Maybe that means finally reading a book from your stack of TBRs on the nightstand, going for a leisurely walk or swim, or savoring a drippy ice cream cone while sitting in the shade of a tree. These simple, small moments of self-care will keep you rejuvenated and ready to take on summer’s bounty.

  1. Get Outside: The warm sunshine and a gentle breeze beckon us to spend more time outside and there’s good reason for it. Nature has a remarkable way of soothing our souls and restoring our energy. Take regular breaks to bask in the beauty of the great outdoors. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sipping a cup of coffee or tea on your balcony, immersing yourself in nature can help reduce stress levels and prevent burnout.

  1. Unplug and Recharge: While technology has undoubtedly made our lives more convenient, it’s important to disconnect from screens and social media from time to time. Set aside specific periods each day or week to disconnect from tech and focus on being present in the moment. By taking a break from the digital world, you’ll allow yourself the space to fully enjoy the present moment and foster genuine connections.

As summer unfolds with its warmth and endless possibilities, it’s critical that we prioritize our well-being and prevent a fiery flame-out come August. By practicing self-care, setting boundaires, embracing the outdoors, and disconnecting from technology, we can create a more balanced and fulfilling summer experience.

Remember, it’s okay to slow down, take breaks, and enjoy the sunshine at your own pace. With a mindful approach, you’ll discover the true essence of summer – relaxation, rejuvenation, and lasting memories.
