Be Brave. Be Kind. Be You.

Brave Hearts University: Life Hacks for Middle School

The transition from elementary to middle school is an exciting milestone, and as parents and caregivers, we want it to go as smoothly as possible. There is so much to navigate as students encounter new environments, new friendships, greater responsibilities, and more independence. Life Hacks for Middle School is designed to support this important step by teaching social and emotional skills that help kids feel confident, capable, and prepared as they take the big leap into middle school.

These small-group, in-person workshops are conveniently held after school on the Alameda campus for 5th graders preparing to transition into middle school. They are offered as two 10-week series, which build on one another and are created around the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning framework. Lessons are related to each of the five competencies below in an easily accessible way that builds resiliency, confidence, and community.

The CASEL Wheel is a social-emotional learning framework with five broad cognitive and behavioral competencies. These life skills are vital to our kids developing healthy identities and thriving as they move from childhood into adolescence and onto adulthood.

Some of the skills we’ll dive into are:

S
elf-Awareness: Personal and social identities, growth mindset, identifying strengths, interests, and values.

Self-Management
: Managing emotions and stress, setting and working toward goals, resilience, and trying new things.

Social Awareness
: Taking another’s perspective, empathy, diversity, kindness, and advocating for oneself.

Relationship Skills
: Communication, friendship, overcoming peer pressure, making friends, and conflict resolution.

Responsible Decision-Making
: Identifying problems and solutions, anticipating consequences, considering one’s actions, and critical thinking.

Each weekly workshop will focus on one theme and incorporate a combination of games, activities, reflection, journaling, crafts, projects, sharing, and discussion to learn and practice the fine art of being a good human.
